ARB Scheme for CPD

“At our final Board meeting of the year, having considered the findings from our public consultation and an extremely useful pilot scheme, the Board agreed the final guidance for our new Scheme for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Following the Building Safety Act, CPD will be a requirement for continuing registration for all architects. We believe this new approach to ensuring architects continue to develop their competency throughout their practising years is essential to public protection, which is one of the reasons that fire and life safety and environmental sustainability will be our scheme’s initial mandatory topics. Another reason is that you, the profession, named these topics in response to our consultation on the new scheme.”

Alan Kershaw, Chair Architects Registration Board

Through the Building Safety Act 2022, ARB has the duty of monitoring the training and development that architects complete throughout their careers, which we do through a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme. From January 2024, all architects are required to participate in the ARB CPD scheme as a condition of registration. The ARB scheme is designed to be flexible and accessible. It is outcomes focused and activities based. CPD helps all architects to maintain and develop their professional competence throughout their careers and gives assurance to the public and those who use the services of architects.

Guidance

The components of the scheme and the requirements are set out in the guidance document here. More information on the requirements of the scheme and the steps architects should take to ensure compliance can be found in this link.
